It's about training others so you can trust them to train and lead others.

















Leadership isn't even about making decisions.
It's about forging others who can make the optimal decisions in your absence.
                    "The Marine Corps pushes battlefield authority down to the lowest levels."

The best example is an excerpt from the book "Semper Fi: Business Leadership the Marine Corps Way" (pages 111-112).

"In Officer Candidate School, there is a famous exercise in which the prospective officers are given the assignment of raising a flag pole so that it meets a number of detailed specifications. It is assumed in the exercise that the officer has one sergeant and two privates to assist him. The instructors are constantly amazed at the ingenuity of the trainees, who have come up with a thousand and one ways to erect that flagpole. What the instructors are looking for, however, is a much simpler answer: ‘‘Tell the sergeant to raise the flagpole and walk away."

Three benefits arise when leadership of this form proliferates. The organization:
                    (1) "runs itself" so senior management can focus on vision and strategic issues,
                    (2)  perpetuates itself in future iterations of the leadership process via succession planning and
                    (3)  is never caught without a qualified, respected leader.
