In business, the only directly controlled variable is people.
That's why building the right culture is critical.
Leadership isn't about leaders, it's about people.
Senior management's primary responsbility is not being shepherds to protect the sheep so they produce results.
It is about building leaders who will generate tomorrow's results thereby ensuring the durability and endurance of the organization.
And there's no way a quitter can ever be a leader.
Take care of your organization and it'll take care of you.
Take care of your people and they'll take care of you.
Proof is from one of my bibles, The Art of War by Sun Tzu (10, 24-25).
(Sure it's several centuries old but so is the theory of gravity and people only ignore that at their peril.)
"The general who advances without coveting fame and retreats without fearing disgrace, whose only thought is to protect his country and do good service for his sovereign, is the jewel of the kingdom.
Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look upon them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death."
